Actor, Patrick Fitzgerald, performs for Professor Michelle Clayton's class

On Oct. 9, Prof. Clayton’s COLT 1421V: Modernisms North and South course hosted actor Patrick Fitzgerald.

Known for his performances in The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Poltergeist: The Legacy (1996), and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999), Fitzgerald is also a fixture of the New York theatrical scene and acclaimed performer of James Joyce’s 1922 novel Ulysses. Additionally, Fitzgerald authored a two-person adaptation of the book Gibraltar. The adaptation was an NYTimes Critic’s Pick in 2013 and is due to return to stages next year! Fitzgerald runs a weekly reading group of Ulysses featuring a group of enthusiasts from all walks of life.

Fitzgerald visited Modernisms North and South via Zoom to talk to students about his own history with Ulysses. An Irish native himself, Fitzgerald then discussed the Irish history students needed to know in order to understand the novel. He concluded his visit by electrifying the Zoom room with performances of two sections from the Cyclops chapter!
